The war never ended. We just took some time off #lka #Aluthgama

“Those Muslims bung, they’re extreme, they can take seven wives AND chop off people’s heads,” Everyman says, reading the morning paper, which is full of the religious violence all over the world. After smugly dissing the extremities of Sharia law, Everyman goes on to diss the Americans, the Pakistanis, to decry the ascension of Modi in India, and will perhaps discuss these issues with his learned peers, whose only vices are daily drinking, wife-beating and the occasional bit of bribery.

Mr. Everyman, today, is a bit silent (as are my vocal neighbors), because the average Sinhalaya has indeed gone a too far. The Bodhu Bala Sena, which is Sri Lanka’s version of the Ku Klux Klan, is on the verge of instigating another civil war.  Aluthgama, a town situated on the Galle-Colombo road, is on fire. The properties of several Muslim citizens are burning. The violence has spread to Beruwela, where Deputy Minister Faizer Mustapha is reportedly walled up inside the Nallemiyah Arabic College in Beruwala, with an armed mob standing outside the gates. In Dehiwala, almost at the feet of Sri Lanka’s commercial capital, a few stones have begun flying.

Following the above hate speech by the religous terrorist Galagoda Atthe Gnanasara, the town of Aluthgama, situated on the Galle-Colombo road, is on fire. Police Curfew has been declared. Whether this is good or bad remains to be seen: these is the same police force who stood by as BBS thugs assaulted peaceful protestors holding candles and torched Muslim-owned businesses in the past.

Break out the pitchforks.

The local media, who seem extremely proactive when it comes to finding fault with the UN or with India’s politics, is unusually silent. The only word from the papers seems to be that a police curfew is in effect after a riot in the town.

According to the grapevine, there’re two possible ways things went down:

1) The BBS held a rally. Someone threw stones.

2) There was an argument on the 12th of June between a Muslim youth and the driver of a monk who was en route to said rally, which snowballed. Religious extremist Galagoda Atthe Gnanasara made a fiery speech in which he promised any Muslim who dared lay a hand on a Sinhalese would get it.

Cue warfare. (PS: for more responsible recaps, visit the Colombo Telegraph or the Republic Square, which seem to be the only functional media outlets. There’s also the BBC (whose motives are never clear).

Why is Everyman responsible for the actions of a few? Because we are. We have let the Bodhu Bala Sena and the Ravana Balaya and their ilk rise to power. We have a proud record of protesting everything – from issues with (free) education to Foie Gras at the Kingsbury – but nobody dared stand up to a militant monk-figure setting people and places on fire under.  I refer to Gnanasara, arguably the Prabhkaran of our times, a figure whose profile would be eeriely similar to anyone who’s cast an eye over the religous extremist groups of today – essentially, a high-functioning sociopath utilizing the fear, respect and obedience afforded to a religious figure to drum up a militant following.

It is so easy to turn everything into a matter of faith. Take a man. Any man will do. Make him a symbol of faith. Pay no attention to the man underneath the robes – be he good, bad, sick, twisted or downright evil: once he is a symbol of faith, his actions are justified. In time, people even forget what the faith stands for. All that matters is the living symbol.

We’ve protested against the BBC and the UN. We’ve fought a 30-year war. We have, at every turn, fought the LTTE disapora and the constant flow of anti-Sri Lanka campaigns stemming from brainwashed morons in Canada. Our politicians have done everything from shooting each other (cue amnesia) to beating up journalists, proving that yes, they have both balls and weapons. We’ve then stood back and cried out to the tourists: “Visit Sri Lanka! Beautiful Sri Lanka! The fountain of Buddhism in Asia!”

Yet nobody has dared stand up to a man in orange robes who is now on the verge of turning into a second Prabhakaran. Our ministers, usually rather vocal and passionate, are next to useless – in fact, one is threatening to resign. The President is urging everyone to stay calm. Stop the press, everyone.

As one person put it : “If this turns into a war monks should be sent to front. Umbalane patangaththe. Umbalama gahagena nethiwenna! (the monks began this – let them fight and die!)”.

PS: for updates, keep an eye on The Republic Square. They’re cataloging reports as they appear.

This statement equally applies for Muslims who stay silent without protesting when whole Muslim communities are transformed in to hardliner Wahabis, This statement equally applies for Muslims who stay silent without protesting when these Wahabis do all sorts of racist transformations,
This statement equally applies for Muslims who stay silent without protesting when some of them destroy Buddhists runes in the eastern provinces!

and the list goes on, so we also need to understand the reciprocity of it and the irony of it! Not that I support BBS, but it has escalated to this height not only because we didn’t protest, it’s also because they (Muslims) didn’t protest against their hardliner Wahabis!

    1. Either you are blind or choose to be so.. educated lot amongst the ill-educated BBS, I can’t believe it…Buddhist statues were destroyed in the east, then go and fight with the eastern people. what did poor aluthgama people do. condemn the act, take pictures video it and show your colours in the east, without being heroes at the desk…and saying Aluthgama asked for it because of things that other muslims are committing..no one has given us the right to lift a stone against another.. Buddhism has been preached wrong, and fake FB pics have misguided you…

BBS has gone too far… They are the lap dog of Top poticians whom u guess is same as mine… This was a minor incident where the driver of a Monk had an altercation with 2 muslim guys. There was an argument between the 2 Muslim guys and the driver, who started running.. the monk followed suit and started running coz he was scared. The MONK had gone to the police station and made a false complaint that he was assaulted… The police asked teh Muslims of the raea to produce the muslim guys to the police stating nothing would happen to the 2 guys. The Monk had sought treatent in the hospital. The 2 muslim guys were produced in court and the JMO report doesn’t say he was assaulted..A similar scenario took place in Badulla, where the BBS monks beat up a Muslim boy in BROAD daylight in the presence of Police and MEDIA.. were the MONKS taken into custody? HECK NO….. The politicians seem to be playing a game they do not know the final result o.. Remember…it was Pakistani Pilots who assisted teh Govt to Bomb in the north.. they have the coordinates of the whole of SL.. all they need is to drop a few bombs and on the RIGHT places, further IF all house maids are sent back from the Middle east..with the men folk SL would have multiple worries… WE are already backward by 40 or more years after the LTTE war, we cannot afford a much bloodier war …. for this time the Muslims would not back down..and possibly the Tamils would join in to take revenge…

    1. No. This has nothing to do with whether or not this is state-sponsored. This has everything to do with the fact that most Sinhalese outside the two major cities (Colombo and Kandy) tacitly support all this. I’m assuming you’re either living in, or were raised in, Colombo: the mostly middle-class Sinhalese in the capital and those in the outstations think differently.

We need to stop making ourselves looking like victims. We did this anti-minority thing in 1915, 1983, and again now. For all our talk of “sinha le”, we still don’t have the spine to stand up and accept our faults as ours.

  5. Please dont compare our martyrs to this idiot. I grew up in colombo. I faced everything. I had lot of good siinhalese friends, but half my family was killed by the sinhalese aswell, so allow it. Just deal with your shit. let us be.

  6. This is Sri Lanka. We never want to make this country into a situation like Chittagong, Bangladesh or Thailand or Myanmar. If we do not take prompt actions today we also end up with such situation in future. Islam ideologists freely operating in SL. All these Muslim politicians are aware of this and supporting underhand behind the screen. Drug racketing is their main mode of income. Funds are injecting from some middle east countries. These ‘Dirty Hambayo’ must understand the reality. Also our Law and order must act promptly against this Islamic extremists. Other wise this type of tragic situations will be happened in future also.

    1. So all the extremists were in Aluthgama. I see a sinister threat behind your last comment. If they are extremists, then we have taken the law into our hands and smashed, looted and burned their houses. What separates them (if there was any extremists) from people like you and BBS. Drug trafficking may be done by some, I can name two politicians in the country, are they muslims? think before you put your big foot in your mouth

  7. So you think muslims are criminals? just compare your life style with us( minorities as whole).
we work hard to earn money, as we get very few government jobs, our people work day and night to earn for a better future. what Sinhalese do (most of) you will see after the office hours who is standing near the bar, even standing and drinking. you cannot compete intoxicated. that’s why you are behind. so don’t annihilate minority, annihilate your bad habits. you will see success coming after you. and if you ask the government to provide a statistics on who is paying relatively more TAX in sri lanka, you will understand.

    1. Well said Muneer. It is 100% true. The Muslim people do their businesses and work hard and Tamil people work hard in up countries in tea estates and foreign currency comes to country by Jafna Tamils, while Sinhalese people go partying and drinking and enjoy end commit crimes on innocent minority people.
